3-2-1- BLAST OFF! Room 14's Rocket Launch

Room 14 had our own stall at the Science Fair . Our experiment was called Rocket Launch .

Have you ever noticed what happens if you let the air out of a balloon? The air goes one way and the balloon moves the other. Rockets work in much the same way . Gases coming out of the engine push the rocket forward. We made our own rockets using balloons, straws, string and sellotape.

We put a string through a drinking straw and tied the two ends of the string to stools to pull it tight.
We blew up a long balloon using a balloon pump.
We kept the air in the balloon using a clothes peg.
We used sellotape to attach the balloon to the side of a straw.

We took off the peg to let the air fly out of the balloon, pushing it forward along the string.
One- Two- Three- Blast Off !

Science Week - Room 14

We talked about what a scientist might look like. We all drew our ideas. We drew lots of glasses, white coats, potions and crazy hair. Ms. O' Connell told us that scientists are all around us and we talked about some of the jobs that use science. Scientists are in our classroom too! WE are scientists!!

Science Fair!

Room 14 had so much fun at the Science Fair! Every class in the school had their own stand. We all went down to the hall to look at the different experiments. It was brilliant. We learned lots of interesting things and we had lots of fun.

Here are a few of the stands that we saw at the fair:

Chromatocraphy

Static Electricity

Gravity- What makes the best parachute?

Mirror Writing

Gravity- Investigating Slopes

Lava Lamps!

String Telephones

Making a lighthouse

Investigating magnets

Science Week in Room 2

We had three science workshops during the week. We had three different teachers for each workshop: Ms. Fox, Ms. Kelly and Ms. Gavin. We were so lucky!

One day Ms. Fox played Pass the Parcel with us. We learned about different materials. We had to identify and sort different papers, plastics and cloths. We passed around a giant parcel. When the music stopped, whoever was holding the parcel had to take off one layer. We had to identify if the layer taken off was paper, plastic or cloth. We got a prize at the end. To keep the jellies we had to tell teacher what material the jellies bag was made of. We said plastic. We were right! It was great fun.

The next day Ms. Kelly came into our class. We did an experiment with her. We had to find out which ball was the bounciest. We tested all the balls by dropping them and counting their bounces. We completed a chart showing the results. Can you figure out which ball is bounciest?

Ms. Gavin came to visit the following day. We did another experiment. We put raisins into a glass of water. We saw the raisins sink to the bottom. We then put raisins into a glass of 7 Up. The raisins started dancing! They kept moving up and down in the glass. We realised that 7 Up has bubbles while water doesn't. The bubbles make the raisins lighter and makes them float to the top. When they get to the top they lose their bubbles and sink down again. This keeps happening. It looks like they are dancing. We recorded the results in our copies.

Science is so much fun!

Science Week in Room 8

Science Fair

We had a science fair in our school hall as part of our Science Week. It was fantastic! We got to show everyone in the school our chromatography investigation and we saw all the experiments and investigations the other classes did.

Fourth class did an investigation on triangles and how it an excellent shape to help support structures. So we tested it out with cards!

5th class did an investigation on gravity and made parachutes with different materials to see which one would make the best parachute; the ones made of plastic made the best parachute

The girls in 5th class  had a cool questionaire that could tell you which side of the brain you use most

Creeping Colours- Chromatography

As part of Science Week we did an investigation called chromatography, big word isn't it? It means the separation of chemicals.
Different inks and dyes are used to make the markers we use at school, so we decided to investigate these markers to see what inks are used to make black, brown, green and purple
Here's how we did it:
We put a dot of black, brown, green and purple markers on four different pieces of filter paper.
We put a very small amount of water into the bottom of a jug
We then gently lowered the filter paper into the water making sure we didn't let the dot of ink touch the water.
We waited and watched and began seeing the colours in the makers separate out. We couldn’t  believe how many  inks are used to make such dark colours!!

Dublin Zoo comes to Scoil Mhuire

Jim from Dublin Zoo paid a visit to us in Scoil Mhuire to tell us all about the animals at Dublin Zoo. He told us so many interesting things about the animals and we got to see some of their skins and even an elephants foot!! We also saw some fossils and a tortoise.
